The outpouring of community support allowed Shower Power and TCAA to get the new/used truck for moving the trailer. The next pictures will be of the trailer and truck wrapped, and featuring the new slogan - 'Everybody Deserves A Clean Start.'

at Dave's Electric Brewpub!!

Dave's Electric Brewpub will donate 5% of its sales for the whole day - or $1 a beer, whichever is greater - to SHOWER POWER! $3 pints, $9 pitchers, $18 towers, and $1 off appetizers.

Come by between 5 - 7PM to buy raffle tickets to win a jersey autographed by Phoenix Suns Grant Hill, or win Lexus-Level tickets to Suns vs. Spurs game on April 7. There are still raffle tickets available to buy! All proceeds go to Shower Power! for the purchase of the portable shower trailer. Raffle drawing is at 7PM.

Congressman Harry Mitchell held a press conference today indicating that he will be donating the pay raise he didn't want to Shower Power and other local charities. The Shower Power Project will receive a donation of $480 annually. Tempe Leadership Class XXV, Stephen Sparks, Lauren Kuby and Tanya Chavez attend the press conference and to answer questions about the project.

We had a fantastic Economic Sustainability Issue Day. It was a 2-part day. We started at Historic Hatton Hall where we heard from a number of Tempe City representatives.

First we heard from Sheri Wakefield-Saenz from Economic Development.

Chris Messer discussed Community Redevelopment.

Joe Nucci covered Historic Preservation.

And Assistant City Manager Jeff Kulaga addressed Sustainable Development Practices in his inimitable way.

We then shifted location and focus. We made our way to Changing Hands Bookstore, where we were treated to a tour of the store, and a panel discussion focused on small businesses. We were fortunate to have a lively and informative panel.

Tempe Leadership Class XXV raising money to provide showers for the working homeless

TEMPE, Ariz. – Tempe Leadership Class XXV, a nonprofit, tax-exempt, community-spirited program of the Tempe Chamber of Commerce, is seeking monetary donations to purchase a mobile shower unit for homeless individuals who participate in Interfaith Homeless Emergency Program (I-HELP). The project, known as “Shower Power,” will allow the working homeless in Tempe the most basic human dignity and aiding their competiveness in the workforce. Tempe Community Action Agency (TCAA) is a nonprofit human services organization that manages
I-HELP. Seven nights a week, 11 faith-based organizations open up their facilities to provide shelter, food and other services to the growing population of working homeless in our community through the I-HELP program.

There are no shelters or day services for the homeless in Tempe. Showers are currently available on a first-come-first-served basis only twice a week. At least 30% of those benefiting from

I-HELP who have obtained jobs, have then lost those jobs due to their inability to bathe. Shower Power will enable working homeless will be able to shower seven days a week and help them to get and keep jobs while moving towards self sufficiency.

Class XXV has risen over $14,000 in pursuit of its fundraising goal of $25,000. Below is a list of donation opportunities:

Shower Power is the ambitious and exciting class project of Tempe Leadership Class XXV. Inspired by the Tempe Leadership classes that have come before them, Class XXV has seized upon an outstanding project that will benefit Tempe now, and leave a legacy of caring far into the future.

This project, known as Shower Power, will provide showers to homeless individuals who participate in the Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program (I-HELP), which provides overnight shelter to the working homeless. Tempe Community Action Agency (TCAA) is a non-profit human services organization that created and manages I-HELP. Seven nights a week, 25 faith-based organizations open up their facilities to provide shelter, food, and other services to the growing population of working homeless in our community through the I-HELP program.

How Can I Help?

Tempe Leadership Class XXV has put together a suite of fund raising opportunities, including direct monetary donations, and one time corporate/business sponsorships to purchase the mobile shower unit and associated hygiene products. To make our dream a reality, we must raise $25,000 (we are over halfway there!)

"Time is short and the community is ever-increasing," according to Class XXV member Lauren Kuby. “We live in challenging economic times with many charities in need. Please help us make Shower Power a reality and contribute, even a small amount, today.”
